Mission Statement

The mission of the City of Grover Beach Parks and Recreation Department is to be committed to providing or facilitating quality recreation services, including programs, classes, special events,
and facilities to all members of the community in a courteous
and efficient manner.

Parks, Recreation and Beautification Commission

The Parks, Recreation and Beautification Commission was established by Ordinance in 2005 when the City Council combined the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Grover Beautiful Committee. This Commission is a body of five citizens that provides recommendations to the City Council and Parks and Recreation Department affecting parks and recreation issues, beautification efforts, and City-sponsored special events. The Commission also provides a forum for citizen input.

Activities and Special Events

  • The Activity Guide for the Cities of Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, and Pismo Beach, and the Oceano Community Services District are now available at City Halls and Parks and Recreation Offices throughout the South County. Don't miss out on some of the great recreation opportunities for the entire family!

  • Sizzlin' Summer Concert Series - Don't miss out on our free concert series, co-sponsored with the Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce. All concerts will be held at the Ramona Garden Park Center, 993 Ramona Avenue, Grover Beach. A play area will be available for children. Food and drink will be available for sale with all proceeds used to offset the cost of the series. All ages are welcome. Bring a beach chair or a blanket and spend an enjoyable summer evening listening to great music.

  • 9/11 Memorial Event - Started in 2002, this annual event provides local residents an opportunity to remember and honor the victims and families of the 2001 terrorist attacks, as well as victims of terrorist actions around the world. This event also honors the men and women currently serving in the armed services.

  • 6th Annual Fall Skate Classic - The Grover Beach Parks and Recreation Department proudly presents this special skateboarding contest for area residents. Oil up the wheels, tighten the trucks, and strap up the safety gear to be ready for this exciting competition.

  • Holiday of Lights House/Business Decorating Contest - The Parks, Recreation and Beautification Commission will sponsor a holiday decorating contest for residents and businesses of Grover Beach. Decorating must be done by Friday, December 5, 2008. Awards will be presented in seven different categories. To nominate a residence or business, contact the Grover Beach Parks and Recreation Department at (805) 473-4580.
    Date: Prejudging, Saturday & Sunday, December 6 & 7, 2008; Final judging Wednesday, December 10, 2008.

  • Tree Lighting Ceremony - This event is an annual favorite with area residents as City officials preside over the lighting of the City Hall tree. Join us as we begin the holiday season with cookies, Santa, and snow!

  • Annual Holiday Parade - "Holiday at the Beach" - The parade begins at 16th Street and finishes at the Ramona Garden Park Center, 993 Ramona Avenue. This is one of the only daytime parades in San Luis Obispo County. Bring the kids and enjoy the entertainment.

  • Tiny Tots Enrichment Program - The Tiny Tots Enrichment Program is a child enrichment program designed to integrate advanced learning and social skills.

    Tiny Tots - This class provides a fun learning experience which includes stories, crafts, music, games, and outdoor play.
    Ages: 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 years
    Dates: Monday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday
    Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
    Fee: $110 per month

    Advanced Tiny Tots - This class is for older preschool children. It introduces colors, shapes, numbers, letters and includes art, games, music, and movement.
    Ages: 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 years

    Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon or 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
    Fee: $110 per month

    Kinderkids - This kindergarten readiness class prepares the child for the academic challenges ahead. This class provides learning experiences through art projects, games, music and movement and dramatic play.
    Ages: 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 years

    Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon or 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

    Internet Driving School - The course is fun, interactive, and educational. Coursework can be completed at any time of day or night. DMV-accepted completion certificates issued upon successful completion of the course.

  • Youth Tennis Instruction - Group tennis instruction is arranged according to skill level, age, and space availability.
    Ages: 7 - 17 years

  • Camp Manners - This workshop will present lessons in proper behavior for all occasions. Participants will receive guidance in a variety of topics including table manners, social etiquette, ordering food in a restaurant, entertainment at home, ceremonial occasions and written communication.
    Ages: 6 - 12 years

    Community Interest:

    • Monarch Butterfly Grove - November thru February.
      Every winter, thousands of Monarch butterflies spend the months of November - February in a grove of eucalyptus trees at Pismo State Beach - located just north of West Grand Avenue along Highway One (and north of the Grover Beach Train Station). Monarchs make this one of the largest wintering sites in the United States. The "Monarch Butterfly Grove" is staffed every day from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., with docent talks given at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

    • Whale Tail Grants Program
      The California Coastal Commission sponsors a program that distributes funds from the sale of Whale Tail License Plates. Grants support programs that teach California children and the general public to value and take action to improve the health of the state's marine and coastal resources. Adopt-A-Beach programs, California Coastal Cleanup Day, as well as other beach maintenance and coastal habitat restoration projects that have an educational component, are also eligible for these grants.     Facilities

    • Rental Facilities - Community Centers and City Parks
    • South County Skate Park The Skate Park is located at 1750 Ramona Avenue (between 16th Street and Oak Park Boulevard) in Grover Beach. A variety of skating features in this 13,234 square foot facility make it a fun skating adventure for children and adults alike! Park use is limited to skateboarding and in-line skating only; no bikes allowed.

    Volunteer Opportunities

    The Grover Beach Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking volunteers to assist with programs and special events held throughout the year. Volunteer opportunities include sport programs, office work, special event support, and much more. Help is needed both before and after events. Students needing community service hours are also welcome to participate as volunteers at any of the Department's special events.

    Do you have a talent you would like to share? Instructors are needed to teach classes for older adults, teens, and youth. Topics and schedules can be tailored to meet your individual availability.
