Transient Occupancy Tax / Tourism Marketing District Information

The City of Grover Beach collects Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) and the San Luis Obispo Tourism Marketing District (TMD) for each night stay. For all overnight stays after July 1, 2020 the  tax is currently the following:

  • 12% City of Grover Beach TOT per night;
  • 1.5% San Luis Obispo County TMD per night.

Your STR operator is required to collect these taxes for each night stay. These taxes collected comprise of, and not limited to:

  • Base night per night stay rate;
  • Cleaning fees;
  • Parking fees;
  • Resort fees.

Platforms such as Airbnb, VRBO, HomeAway, etc. may collect additional "service fees". These fees are not TOT/TDM fees. These are fees collected by the platform to run, maintain, and offer customer services. These fees are set by these platforms, and are not included in collected city taxes.

TOT fees collected by the City are deposited into the City's General Fund, and are used to fund projects throughout the City including police, parks and recreation,  road maintenance, and other city services.

TMD fees are collected by the City, and then transfer to San Luis Obispo County. These fees are then used to market and advertise San Luis Obispo County to attract visitors from all parts of nation and the world! For more information please visit:
