[ARCHIVED] Grover Beach Begins Construction on Major Street Improvement Project for South Oak Park Boulevard

Golden Shovels

The City of Grover Beach recently began a major construction project on South Oak Park Boulevard, marking a new phase of annual major street improvements and repairs to take place over the next several years throughout the City. On November 16, Mayor Jeff Lee joined City staff and the contractor S. Chaves to recognize the significance of beginning this new project extending from south of the intersection at West Grand Avenue to Mentone Avenue.

“We are delighted to begin this important project to improve South Oak Park Boulevard in Grover Beach,” said Mayor Lee. “This project includes a full slate of improvements on this key thoroughfare including new pavement and bike lanes while preserving parking and landscaped medians.”

South Oak Park will be reconfigured to include a single vehicle lane in each direction, enabling the installation of a buffered bike lane and retention of on-street parking. The addition of bike lanes is another example of advancing transportation options in the city while the parking will continue to benefit local residents. Grover Beach residents will begin seeing progress on South Oak Park immediately, starting with concrete work to install new accessible corner ramps.

Following the Thanksgiving holiday, crews will commence pavement rehabilitation work to improve the condition of the street and provide drivers with a smoother and safer ride. This includes a full-depth pavement reclamation effort and building a new foundation for an entirely new street.

Residents may experience some traffic impacts during the course of this project, including limited street parking during active construction. However, a single lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times to accommodate regular commuter needs along with potential increased travel during the holiday season. For residents living in the impacted area, the contractor will provide door hangers 48 hours prior to starting the work to alleviate concerns. Residents may contact the Public Works Department at (805) 473-4530 with further questions about traffic impacts.

Future improvements coming to South Oak Park Boulevard under the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) include additional pavement rehabilitation, restriping, and the addition of buffered bike lanes south of Mentone Avenue extending to The Pike. This ongoing work is another example of City’s commitment to street upgrades, along with bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements, that residents will benefit from each year consistent with the City Council’s adopted goals and priorities.
